Will Poutler will play Pennywise the Clown in 'It'.
The remake of Stephen King’s It has found its Pennywise.
Will Poutler, most famous for his latest roles in The Maze Runner and We’re the Millers, is in negotiations to star as Pennywise in the upcoming adaptation of Stephen King’s novel directed and co-written by Cary Fukunaga. Fukunaga is an Emmy-winning director best know for his work on HBO’s True Detective.
The premise of the Stephen King novel follows a group of kids as they take on a monster that has been haunting their town. They are up against the shapeshifter, Pennywise, who has been luring children into the sewers to feed on their fears and murder them. This will be an interesting role for Poutler, who up until his upcoming film with Leonardo DiCaprio, The Revenant, has stuck to lighthearted comedies or young adult movies.
“After considering older actors like Mark Rylance and Ben Mendelsohn for the Pennywise role, New Line wanted to take a different route and go younger,” according to Variety. “Sources say in the end, Fukunaga could not say no after being blown away by Poulter’s audition for the part and felt he was the right choice for the role.”
Fukunaga’s film will be the first feature film adaptation of the classic horror story. The story was brought to the small-screen in 1991 as a 3 part TV miniseries, staring Tim Curry.
The New Ling adaptation is rumored to be split into two movies, one portraying the main characters as children and the other following their struggle with Pennywise as adults. Poutler is set to star in both.
No details on when the movie will be released have been announced.
