Jane Fonda reunites with Lily Tomlin on Netflix series

Veteran actresses Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin have rejoined forces to team up for a buddy comedy set to be released on Netflix on Friday, May 8.

Both women play two very different personality types undergoing the exact same scenario: their husbands leaving them for each other. A startling proposal for the women, to be sure, how they deal with it is the premise for the entire show. Discovering that their husbands are not only gay, but gay for each other after thirty plus years of marriage, “Grace and Frankie” explores what characters in their 70s attempt to cobble together after everything falls apart.

A new platform for both of these ladies, along with Sam Waterston and Martin Sheen, appearing as the husbands, this show is sure to appeal to boomers, a serious consideration being made by producers in this day and age.

Fonda says of her character: “It’s a challenge. What has happened to these women is horrendous. It’s the kind of thing that knocks the legs out from under you.”

The show as she puts it is about: “How they get back on their feet.”

NY Daily News writes that Tomlin’s “humor runs toward dry, like when she says she should have guessed something was up when Sol asked her to wear a dildo.”

Tomlin’s character is straight out of the 60s, burning incense, wearing turquoise jewelry and the like. Fonda’s character is more the country club type. Together, they form a very endearing odd couple ripe for a sitcom.

The last time the two starred in a project together was the 1980 Dolly Parton comedy “9 to 5.” Both Fonda and Tomlin say that the reunion is very welcome, indeed and that if they don’t get picked up for a second season, Tomlin says, “one of the things I’d miss most is walking over to her trailer every morning.”
