After four seasons of crazy, revenge-seeking drama, ABC has canceled the series Revenge. The series finale is set to air May 10.
Despite rumors of an upcoming spinoff or another season, the series, starring Emily VanCamp and Madeleine Stowe, will not be returning. According to Entertainment Weekly executive producer Sunil Nayar said that fans can officially know that “this will be the end of the story.” She added that “as much as we all adore the show, it has hit exactly the mark it needed to to end.”
The news comes just after Madeleine Stowe’s character, Victoria Grayson, was killed off the show, and Stowe said she would not be returning whether or not there was another season, as reported by Variety. Earlier in the season, Josh Bowman, another key character, was killed off the show. This only left three original cast members: Emily Thorne, Nick Wechsler and Gabriel Mann.
Viewers that have stuck with the series since 2011 have been expecting an end to the show. Emily, also known as Amanda Clarke, came as close as she could to realizing her plan for vengeance against the Grayson family. Now, she is stuck in jail for the last few episodes after being framed for the murder of Victoria Grayson.
Nayar explained that there was a pitch in place for the show to continue. However, she said she felt “grateful” that the network and studio trusted her team’s creativity and believed that they came up with “a great way to end these stories.”
She promised fans some closure in the finale, but she also said there would be a “tiny little cliffhanger.” She said that the last “couple chapters are worthy of the first many.”
This season, episodes of Revenge are at a 2.0 rating in adults between the ages of 18 and 49. There are a total of 7.13 million viewers, which is down about 1 million viewers from last year. The show peaked at about 10 million viewers when it aired on Wednesdays at 10 p.m. And it experienced a large drop off when it was switched to Sunday nights.
