Robert Downey Jr. makes surprise appearance at charity screening of ‘Avengers’

Hundreds gathered at Manhattan’s E-Walk theater for a surprise viewing of upcoming film ‘The Avengers: Age of Ultron.’ The even bigger surprise was the pop-up visit from Robert Downey Jr!

Aspiring filmmakers, actors, and writers had the surprise of their life Thursday Apr. 23, 2015 as Iron Man Robert Downey Jr. made an unexpected pop visit at a movie theater in Manhattan. As part of a charity screening that was co-sponsored by NY Daily News, Marvel Studios, and Disney, the kids from several charities gathered at a theater to enjoy a viewing of ‘ Robert Downey Jr. surprises audience prior to teen charity screening of ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ in New York.’ Downey shared a twist to the plot with the crowd before the movie even began. Downey stated that hearing the crowd applauding just reminded him of what it was like to go to the movies as a child in New York. ‘It’s so exciting, the rowdier the audience, the better,’ he stated excitingly.

The viewing also served as a premiere for a few new public service announcements that will be shown in taxi cabs around Manhattan soon. Three other castmates from the film also donated their time for the PSAs campaigns. The entertainment and media campaign ‘Volunteering: Good for You. Good for Your City’ will be for the NYC Service and the Mayor’s Office. The aim for the PSA is to inspire teenagers around the city to volunteer their time like superheroes. After filming had come to a closing, Actor Chris Evans shared ‘I love doing what I do, and obviously it provides a lot for myself and my family. If I can actually extend that ripple effect to people who need it, all the better.’

The statement inspired Bronx resident and Production Assistant for Made in NY Production Program, Lisa Escobio, who was elated that Mark Ruffalo used the words she wrote. ‘I just kept reading the congratulatory e-mail over and over,’ she stated.

Alongside Escobio were other graduates of Manhattan’s Made in NY program that serves as an organization that helps underprivileged children for careers in TV and film production. Clearly a successful one at that.
