Netflix says Adam Sandler’s new film isn’t racist, it’s satire

Netflix defended Adam Sandler’s first movie for the streaming services, The Ridiculous Six, after several Native Americans actors and crew walked off the set over disagreements on how their culture is being portrayed. The actors are upset with what they believe to be a misinterpretation of the Apache culture and the overall inaccuracy of the film.

“The movie has ridiculous in the title for a reason: because it is ridiculous,” the streaming service said in a statement defending the film. “It is a broad satire of Western movies and the stereotypes they popularized, featuring a diverse cast that is not only part of — but in on — the joke.”

Netflix was not the only party to dismiss the actors’ concerns. Actors and crew reported the same indifference when voicing their concerns to producers.

“When I began doing this film, I had an uneasy feeling inside of me and I felt so conflicted,” Allison Young, Navajo, an actress on the show told Indian Country. “We talked to the producers about our concerns. They just told us, ‘If you guys are so sensitive, you should leave.’

Nothing has changed,” Young shared. “We are still just Hollywood Indians.”

The movie has a star-studded cast featuring Sandler alongside Terry Crews, Nick Nolte, Steve Buscemi, Will Forte, Luke Wilson and Whitney Cummings.

Sandler and his production company, Happy Madison, have yet to comment on the walk off. However, Deadline reported that despite the absence of the Native American actors, sources say there has been no interruption to the filming schedule.
