Apple has confirmed that the watch will arrive sooner than expected for some.
The official launch date of the much-anticipated Apple Watch is this Friday, April 24, and a bunch of lucky customers may get their watches on that date, or not too far after.
This early processing news broke when readers of the 9to5Mac blog who had preorders of the watch set for May or June ship dates noticed this week that their order statuses had changed from “processing” to “preparing for shipment.” More tellingly, folks saw that their credit cards were charged once this status change took place.
Apple later confirmed that some lucky customers will be receiving their watches early.
“We’re happy to be updating many customers today with the news that their Apple Watch will arrive sooner than expected,” an Apple spokeswoman told BuzzFeed News. “Our team is working to fill orders as quickly as possible based on the available supply and the order in which they were received. We know many customers are still facing long lead times and we appreciate their patience.”
The first round of Apple Watch delivery dates stated on order forms is April 24-May 8, and it now looks many customers should receive their watches on the front end of that schedule. However, some customers with the April 24-May 8 window listed on their forms still have yet to be moved to the “preparing for shipment” status, leading to confusion over who will get their phone early, and who will not.
Indeed, speculation over how Apple is determining who receives the early shipping is now running wild. Mashable notes a popular theory that it has do with the type of watch, as those who ordered black wristbands claim to still be in “processing” status limbo. Location or time of order may also impact the shipping time.
