New movie, "Avengers: Age of Ultron" pointedly adds more female superheroes to their roster.
Scarlett Johansson reprised her role as Black Widow in the new movie and sequel “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” Women in superhero movies have been scarce, and Johanssen was happy to see that the sequel gave her role more action and that more female hero characters were introduced.
It was reported that Walt Disney Co. catered to women audience more than men when promoting the new movie for the Avengers. Female actors from the movie were sent to day time shows, like Ellen and The View, to promote the sequel due to come out May 2.
Since 2008, when super hero movies became a trend, movie studios or films have drawn some criticism for not having enough female superheroes. Paul Dergarabedian, box office expert, said that females make up a huge share of ticket sales.
When “The Avengers” came out in theaters back in 2012, forty percent of the audience of the opening weekend was made up of female moviegoers. This was a survey taken by Disney at that time.
So now, it is believed that superhero movies are also attracting female movie goers just as much as men. As for having more female super hero characters, the movies are already on it. For the sequel to “The Avengers,” a major powerful character is introduced, Scarlet Witch.
“Avengers: Age of Ultron” will also introduce some other female characters, but they were not reported for spoiler reasons. As for the Black Widow, her character gets vamped up a bit since her scenes are fully action packed. Johansson said to the press that it is “a step in the right direction” regarding the issue of having a shortage of female superheroes in movies.
