New York’s brand new $422 million museum will house 22,000 pieces of art

The new building the Whitney Museum of American Art will now house a 22,000 piece collection. There was a special press preview in mid-April 2015 to present some old favorites and also showcase some newer items in the collection.

The home represents a glass and steel construction showing off New York City and the views of the Hudson River. The new building is in the New York City Meatpacking district; next to the high Line park which is elevated.

One of the largest events, called “America is Hard to See” will feature a 650-piece exhibition and named from a Robert Frost poem. The Whitney will be opening with 400 artists from the 1900’s to the present with an estimated quarter of those not having been shown previously or for decades. According to the curator, space was not available for all that was to offer to those who visited the museum’s collection.

The museum’s curator, Donna De Salvo who worked closely with the architectural staff, told the Associated Press the building and design presented opportunities for “new narratives on how we think of American art.” Adam Weinberg, museum director sees the museum for “risk-taking and discovery” and added “We are creating an environment in which visitors will be encouraged to connect deeply with art through an irreplaceable first-hand experience.”

The museum seems hopeful that everyone will come as the sign in the elevator says it is safe up to 410 people.

The Whitney is one of major four museum art collections in New York City: Guggenheim, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art are the other three.
