CBS thanks David Letterman with 90-minute special about his life

David Letterman puts and end to long running talk show with TV special.

The king of late night television, David Letterman, may be stepping down soon, though CBS has the perfect idea for his departure. The Late Night Show in which Letterman hosted for years, will be ended but CBS will be sending him off with a 90-minute prime-time retrospective called David Letterman: A Life in Television.

Expected to air on Monday, May 4, David Letterman: A Life on Television will cover Letterman’s entire television career, starting all the way way back when he was a weatherman for an Indianapolis news program. Viewers can definitely expect to see his guest spots on The Tonight Show, which led to him hosting Late Night with David Letterman after a brief stint on a morning show. Various video clips showing his 30+ year career will be shown, including those with famous celebrities and musical acts.

The special is expected to be hosted by comedian and TV star Ray Romano, which makes a lot of sense, as Romano’s hit series Everybody Loves Raymond came to be after his successful stand-up appearance on Late Show in 1995. Letterman’s company Worldwide Pants even produced the show.

By the time he retires next month, Letterman will have hosted 6,028 late night broadcasts, and was the recipient of 16 Emmy Awards, a Peabody Award and a Kennedy Center Honor, among many other accolades. His final show will be on Wednesday, May 20, and he’s got a slew of impressive guests lined up for the following weeks, including Julia Roberts, George Clooney, Will Ferrell, Robert Downey Jr., Steve Martin, Oprah Winfrey, Paul Rudd and many more.
