Actress Gwyneth Paltrow and singer Chris Martin are officially splitting after Paltrow filed for divorce. After more than 11 years with Martin, she cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for the dissolve of the marriage.
Paltrow wrote that she and the Coldplay frontman have been unofficially uncoupled for a while. Paltrow wrote in her filing Monday that they split in May 2013, according to Billboard.
That news was not revealed to the public until March 2014. Paltrow distributed a statement on her lifestyle website, Goop, saying that she and Martin were “consciously uncoupling.” The term drew attention along with mockery and she later regretted her announcement.
She told Howard Stern on his radio show that it was a “goofy term” that she wished she did not use out of context. She said that she never knew it was cause such a “big thing.”
“This is…a philosophy,” Paltrow said. The term was coined by author and therapist Katherine Woodward Thomas who created the five-step “Conscious Uncoupling” online process.
Paltrow and Martin, who were married in December 2003, have a 10-year-old daughter, Apple, and a 9-year-old son, Moses. They still live in Los Angeles just across the street from each other.
They have remained amicable through their divorce and separation process, as reported by TMZ, and they even went on vacation as a family to Mexico in March. Paltrow told Stern that they would “always be a family.”
As for the kids, Paltrow is looking for joint custody. As for the assets, the filing did not say how they would be handled.
Since their separation, Paltrow has reportedly been seen with Glee producer Brad Falchuk. And Martin has been seen with Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence.
Paltrow is known for her roles in films such as Seven, Iron Man, The Avengers and more. She won an Oscar for best actress in a leading role for her work as Viola De Lesseps in the 1998 film Shakespeare in Love. Martin is known as the lead singer of Coldplay. Martin, along with his band, has won six Grammy awards.
