The CEO accidentally let the release date slip during a conference call.
We already knew that Microsoft planned to release Windows 10 sometime this summer, but the company’s timeline just got a lot more specific, thanks to a comment in passing from Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) CEO, Lisa Su. On a conference call discussing AMD’s quarterly earnings, Su accidentally let slip that Microsoft would release Windows 10 in late July.
“What we also are factoring in is, you know, with the Windows 10 launch at the end of July, we are watching sort of the impact of that on the back-to-school season, and expect that it might have a bit of a delay to the normal back-to-school season inventory build-up,” said Su, according to transcript posted at Seeking Alpha.
Based on the transcript, it does not look like anyone on the call followed up on Su’s reveal. But as CNET notes, as one of Microsoft’s hardware partners, AMD would be in a position to know the Windows 10 release date.
Indeed, AMD may be planning to coordinate the release of its new flagship graphics card, the Radeon R9-300 series, with the release of the new operating system. According to PC World, Su additionally stated on the call that AMD plans to discuss the new graphics cards before the end of June, which raises the likelihood that a release would come soon after.
Many tech analysts are excited for the release of Windows 10, which is set to include some key improvements over its predecessor, including a redesigned Start menu, Cortana integration and a new default browser to replace Internet Explorer.
