‘Groundhog Day’ musical will be ‘instantly recognizable and utterly different’

The Musical version of Groundhog Day is set to have its world premiere at London’s Old Vic Theatre next year. The show will then make its Broadway premiere in 2017.

The show will reunite the creative minds behind the incredibly successful adaptation of Roald Dahl’s Matilda. Matthew Warchus, the director, will be joined by lyricist and comedian Tim Minchin, costume designer Rob Howell and choreographer Peter Darling.

Groundhog Day the musical will be based off the screenplay by Danny Rubin who co-wrote the the 1993 movie version starring Bill Murray.  In the film, Bill Murray plays a disgruntled weather man sent to cover the outcome of an annual Groundhog Day event. The character ends up getting stuck in a time-loop, forced to relieve the same day over and over again. The movie is beloved by many comedy movie goers.

“Our version of Groundhog Day is going to be both instantly recognizable and utterly different.”  said Minchin in an earlier interview. Warchus adds that the show is “full of intellect, integrity and wit, insight, humor — and of course romance.”

Warchus is set to take over the management of Old Vic from Kevin Spacey, who during his tenure is credited with bringing the theater back from near closure. The theater will premier eight shows this season, with four of them directed by Warchus. The season will open in September with a play titled Future Conditional.

Casting details for Groundhog Day have yet to be announced.
