The redesigned image search will be cleaner, with a new focus on getting relevant information to the user.
Microsoft announced last week that major enhancements will be coming to the image search feature in Bing. The changes come after Microsoft conducted research into how users discover images on Bing.
“In studying image search behavior, we saw that, fundamentally, the image may not be the destination, but rather, the starting point for something more,”said the Bing image search team in a blog post.
Indeed, these improvements will allow users to do much more than just find a photo. Once users click on a picture, they will then be able to scroll or swipe up to learn more about the picture or be redirected in their search. Specifically, the new Bing image search will display: places to buy the product in the image; related searches based on the image; Pinterest collections containing the image; additional sizes of the image; and, of course, web pages with this image so users can find more information.
In addition to making all this new information available, the Bing team also tweaked the look of its image view page. The redesigned page should now be cleaner, with more of a focus on helping the user find what he or she is looking for. These improvements should make the mobile viewing experience more pleasant as well.
According to CNET, Bing is currently the third most popular search engine worldwide, behind Google and China’s Baidu. Consumers should start to see the image search enhancements in the next few weeks. The changes will be rolled out to PCs, smartphones, and tablets, as well as iPhone and Android apps.
