Gwyneth Paltrow will live on just $29 worth of food for a week

Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow has a reputation for loving high-end fare – she counts celeb chef Mario Batali among her favorite foodie companions, and showcases recipes with pricey, hard-t0-find ingredients on her lifestyle blog GOOP – but for one week she will be living on just $1.38 per meal, the average cost for those living on America’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

Paltrow will be participating in the #FoodBankNYCChallenge campaign, which aims to raise awareness both about the difficulties low-income people face in securing regular meals, and demonstrate the impact that potential program cuts will have on the food-insecure.

Batali was on hand to support the actress as she announced plans to take up the challenge, and on Thursday she tweeted a shot of the items she was able to purchase with her weekly cash allotment – $29. Paltrow was able to purchase a carton of eggs, seven limes, a package of tortillas, frozen peas, one ear of corn, one avocado, and one tomato.

In the accompanying caption, she wrote, “This is what $29 gets you at the grocery store – what families on SNAP (i.e. food stamps) have to live on for a week.”

Paltrow wants her fans and famous friends on board as well – in a second post, she encouraged followers to donate to the Food Bank of New York City, and prodded Los Angeles chef Roy Choi to take up the challenge too.

For his part, Batali called out rock legends Sting and Debbie Harry to join the challenge.

According to the Food Research and Action Center, approximately 46 million people in the United States regularly use food stamps, although the numbers have declined by about 530,000 since December 2013.
