For the new MacBook, Apple said they set out to "engineer a full-size experience into the lightest and most compact MacBook ever."
The pre-order for the brand new Apple Watch is the big news in the technology world this morning. However, according to a new report from Mac Rumors, Apple fans needn’t be too disappointed if they didn’t get an Apple Watch order placed before the device sold out for the April 24th launch date. Apparently, Apple also put a new Retina MacBook up for pre-order today.
Granted, consumers can still pre-order the Apple Watch, but the ship date on the device has changed from the original launch date of April 24th to sometime in June. In the meantime, though, Apple fans can drown their sorrows by splurging on a brand-new MacBook model! Shipping estimates for most models of the new laptop are still at one to three days, though custom configurations will take longer.
The new MacBook joins Apple’s laptop fleet, alongside existing MacBook Air and MacBook Pro lines. It comes in three colors, including silver, space grey, and gold. The gold model is the most in-demand at this point in time, with the shipping estimate for those models currently sitting at three to four weeks.
For the new MacBook, Apple said they set out to “engineer a full-size experience into the lightest and most compact MacBook ever.” The result is a laptop that is razor thin, at 13.1mm, and that only weighs two pounds. It is also smaller than the most basic MacBook Pro or MacBook Air models, with a screen that measures 12 inches diagonally.
The MacBook also comes with Retina display, a thinner and supposedly more comfortable keyboard, and a Force Touch trackpad that is more sensitive to differing finger pressures or gestures than its predecessors. Unfortunately, though, in shooting for a compact laptop experience, Apple had to go with a relatively modest processor chip for the new MacBook. In other words, this new laptop is slower and less powerful than its Pro and Air counterparts.
The new MacBook Air comes in two different configurations, available in all three colors. The most basic model boasts 256GB of flash drive storage, 8 gigs of RAM, and a 1.1GHz processor. The upgraded model doubles the flash storage and bumps the processor to a 1.2GHz chip. The base prices for these models are $1,299 and $1,599, respectively. Configurations and upgrades are available on Apple’s site.
