Daughter of Kurt Cobain admits she doesn’t ‘really like Nirvana that much’

Being raised on grunge does not necessarily mean you are going grow up to like grunge. Just ask Francis Bean Cobain, daughter of the late Kurt Cobain, iconic leader of Nirvana, and Courtney Love.

“The grunge scene is not what I’m interested in,’’ Bean told Rolling Stone. “But ‘Territorial Pissings’ is a fucking great song. And “Dumb” — I cry every time I hear that song. It’s a stripped-down version of Kurt’s perception of himself. Of himself on drugs, off drugs, feeling inadequate to be titled the voice of a generation.”

And when giving it more thought, the daughter of Rock and Roll royalty said she does not even like her Dad’s band very much.

“I’m more into Mercury Rev, Oasis, Brian Jonestown Massacre,” Cobain told the magazine. “I don’t really like Nirvana that much.”

“I would have felt more awkward if I’d been a fan,” the 22-year-old told Rolling Stone, where she at one time worked as an intern. “I was around 15 when I realized he was inescapable. Even if I was in a car and had the radio on, there’s my dad. He’s larger than life. And our culture is obsessed with dead musicians. We love to put them on a pedestal.”

A new acknowledgment of that adoration will come in the form of Brett Morgen’s documentary “Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck’’ slated to air May 4 on HBO, proceeding a Sundance premiere that was held January 24 in Park City, Utah where the rocker’s daughter was in attendance.
