The Lego company has established themselves over the years as one of the most successful toys for children, though a recent idea is appealing to an older fan base. On a Lego fan site, where loyalist submit their ideas for future Lego products, the idea of replicating the “Golden Girls” set is causing a buzz. The TV show, that aired from 1985 to 1992, follows the lives of four elderly women living together in Florida, and is having fans hoping Lego follows through on the idea.
On the site, fans submit ideas for prospective Lego set ideas, and if that idea reaches 10,000 supporters, it is reviewed and made into an new Lego product. The creator then receives 1 percent of the total net sales, which include third-party intellectual property rights for further development such as a game, TV show or movie. The creator of the “Golden Girl” concept, who goes by the handle LostSleep, also gets five complimentary copies of his Lego idea set, as well as credit on the packaging.
The “Golden Girls” set has more than 5,000 votes and supporters. The enthusiasm in the comments was undeniable. “Here, just take my money! Best idea ever!” wrote member oshea1222. And supporter gabbygia1 asked “How can this not be made?! Huge mistake if it’s not. I can not wait to get these.”
Lego brand relations, Amanda Santoro, noted that anyone 13 or older may submit an idea and that generally about a dozen ideas per quarter reach the review stage. Currently, nine projects have been made into limited edition Lego sets, including the Ecto-1 from “Ghostbusters” and the DeLorean from “Back to the Future.”
