Fans of the Marvel universe are left to speculate after studio's cryptic comments.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Marvel Studios President, Kevin Feige hinted that an unexpected female character will appear in Avengers: Age of Ultron.
He goes on to say that fans of the franchise may already be familiar with her. “It’s not a big deal. But it’s a good character,” stated Feige. This isn’t the first time production has teased at the addition of a female character.
“There are four prominent female roles in the center of the movie,” writer and direct, Joss Whedon told YouTube show HeyYouGuys last year.
Three female characters are officially signed on for the sequel—including Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Cobie Smulders as S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Maria Hill and Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlett Witch. The fourth remains a mystery.
Many fans thought that superheroine Captain Marvel could make a possible appearance but Feige assured Entertainment Weekly that this is not the case.
Actresses Julie Deply and Linda Cardellini were recently announced to have roles in the upcoming film. Since their involvement was announced so late in the game, it is unlikely that they will play a major role in Avengers: Age of Ultron’s plot but could possibly be the mystery character.
There are even rumors that characters from past Marvel movies may reprise their roles in the upcoming sequel. Mxdwn.com speculates that perhaps Natalie Portman or Gwyneth Paltrow might make an appearance to rekindle their superhero romances.
Fortunately, fans will not have to wonder for long. Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron premieres in theaters on May 1st.
