Could it be that Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield, who met on the set of The Amazing Spider-Man and have been dating for three years, may not be in it for the long haul? E! News reports that the couple is taking a page from the playbook of Friends’ on-again, off-again couple Ross and Rachel, and are currently on a break, but haven’t officially split.
Speculation of the couple’s potential separation began running rampant during this year’s awards season, when Stone, who was scooping up nominations left and right for her role in Birdman, kept showing up on the red carpet sans Garfield. Considering this was arguably the most attention Stone has ever gotten for a movie role, it was surprising her boyfriend wasn’t by her side.
The two appear to last have been spotted at a public event together on January 5, during a dinner for Birdman sponsored by Fox Searchlight.
Sources for E! report that Stone and Garfield are on good terms, which might indicate that the time apart is related to very different work schedules. Additionally, the pair isn’t referring to their separation as a break themselves, but it appears clear that they haven’t had much chance to spend a lot of quality time with one another.
Garfield is on location in Taiwan, shooting Martin Scorsese’s latest film, Silence, while two pictures starring Stone are set to be released this summer – Aloha, directed by Cameron Crowe, and Irrational Man, Woody Allen’s latest.
Representatives for the actors have not commented on any speculation thus far.
Stone and Garfield are currently one of Hollywood’s favorite couples, winning fans with their clever approach to invasive paparazzi – they will often hold up signs with links to favorite charities when snapped out in public. Let’s hope their break is short and sweet!
