Proposed scheduling for the 2016 convention may cause a problem as the event dates near.
WonderCon, a sister convention to the wildly popular ComicCon International held annually in San Diego, will be moving from Anaheim to Los Angeles next year.
Next year’s event will be held March 25-27 in 2016 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. City officials estimated the three-day convention will have a $32 million economic impact on the area. Last year’s event had an estimated 60,000 attendees.
Many believe the relocation to Los Angeles is a temporary because WonderCon’s proposed dates conflict with other events at the Anaheim Convention Center. Still, Los Angeles officials are hoping the move will be a permanent one.
“Los Angeles is honored to have been selected as the destination for WonderCon 2016,” Mayor Eric Garcetti said. “We look forward to establishing a long-term partnership with ComicCon International, the presenter, and helping them establish a home base in L.A. We anticipate the show to be highly attended and to set the precedent for future successful Comic-com events in L.A.”
WonderCon, which was originally held and launched in Oakland in 1987 and staying in the Bay Area until 2011, has been held in Anaheim for the past four years.
San Diego is facing a similar issue in growth with ComicCon International, WonderCon’s big sister, which draws almost double the number of attendees as WonderCon. In a matter of minutes, each year, downtown hotel rooms sell out, causing headaches for out-of-town attendees. Los Angeles officials are also trying to lure ComicCon International to the City of Angels.
“We’re accustomed to hosting large-scale, highly attended events here at the Los Angeles Convention Center and our neighboring L.A. Live Campus,’’ said Brad Gessner, AEG Facilities Senior Vice-President and General Manager of the Los Angeles Convention Center. “Los Angeles is the second largest market in the country, positioned at the doorstep to Hollywood and offers unparalleled natural growth for WonderCon.”
