Rick Gervais and Eric Bana sell comedy to Netflix

Rights to the new Ricky Gervais film were sold to Netflix.

A new film called Special Correspondents by Rick Gervais has been sold its rights to Netflix by Bron Studios from Vancouver. The film, written and directed by Gervais, stars Eric Bana and is due to debut next year.

As reported on Monday, it was stated by Brons’ Aaron Gilbert that Netflix approached Bron Studios once they learned about the film. Gilbert is producing the film the with director Gervais.  He also claims that Netflix is now fully financing the film.

The film is about a struggling radio journalist from New York due to his immoral lifestyle who happens to be arrogant as well. The journalist played by Bana hopes to revive his career by faking news reports of war from a his place right above a Spanish restaurant.

The movie, Special Correspondents, is said to be typical of Rick Gervais humor. Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos, in a statement release, said that the movie by Gervais is a “kind of great grown-up comedy.”

Sarandos added that the subject of the movie is something that is rarely made anymore by studios. He also concluded that the movie made by Gervais is perfect for Netflix and its members around the world.

It is also said that Netflix took the rights for the movie made by Gervais because they had a preexisting relationship. This relationship that existed between Netflix and Rick Gervais was due to the show Derek that was aired in 2013, which later continued on NBC.
