Though Deborah Ann Woll has played a teenage vampire for years on HBO’s “True Blood”, she is ecstatic to move onto a new role for the new Netflix drama “Marvel’s Daredevil.” It’s her chance to play as a grown up woman and to show the audiences her maturity as an actress. In the drama, she plays the role of Karen Page. Page is the secretary and love interest of blind lawyer Matt Murdock (who is also the Marvel superhero “Daredevil”).
The character hits close to home due to the fact that Woll’s boyfriend of seven years, comedian EJ Scott, has the rare genetic disease choroideremia, which is causing him to gradually lose his ability to see. Woll is proud to be a part of the production and has even stated that, “It was intensely interesting to me to have a visually impaired character on television. I think they’re under-represented for sure,” she continued to say “We’re not meant to pity [Daredevil] and we’re not ignoring the fact that he’s blind either. It’s a part of his personality but it doesn’t define him. He’s very capable. As the partner to someone who is legally blind … I am invested in seeing that story told in a compassionate but realistic way.” Not only does Woll carry a connection in the characters and their inflictions, but she carries a connection with the location. The drama takes place in Brooklyn, where she was born an raised. During filming, she was given the opportunity to spend time with close friends and family with whom she grew up.
