‘Furious 7’ dominates Easter weekend box office

A big opening weekend for the franchise.

Furious 7 ruled the world over Easter weekend, raking in $143.6 million in the United States and $384 globally. Those numbers broke numerous records and offered further proof that the Fast & Furious franchise has become one of the most bankable in Hollywood.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, for instance, Furious 7‘s impressive haul made for the biggest domestic opening of any film since 2013’s The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. The film also notched the fourth highest global box office weekend in history, trailing behind Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 ($483.2 million), Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince ($394.4 million), and The Avengers ($392.5 million).

Needless to say, those are big films from big franchises. Perhaps even more significant, though, are the franchises not represented on that short list. That Furious 7 had a bigger worldwide weekend than any films from the James Bond, Twilight, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Spider-Man, Iron Man, or Pirates of the Caribbean franchises shows just how much the audience for the Fast series has grown over the years. For reference, 2001’s series-starting installment, The Fast in the Furious, had a global box office total of $207.3 million.

In addition, the impressive Easter weekend run made for the highest opening of any Fast film, the biggest box office weekend of any film ever released in April, and a huge win for Universal, who opened the movie on more than 4,000 screens in the United States and some 10,500 overseas.

At least some of the buzz surrounding Furious 7 comes from the death of star Paul Walker, who was killed in a car accident around Thanksgiving 2013. The seventh installment of the series was filming at the time, and was scheduled for a July 2014 release date. The tragedy forced filmmakers and studio heads to go back to the drawing board and try to determine how to move forward–or indeed, whether to move forward at all. Unsurprisingly, Furious 7 serves as something of a tribute for the late Walker.

Universal is reportedly planning three more films for the Fast & Furious franchise, and the huge success of Furious 7 this past weekend will only further solidify those plans.
