The controversy surrounding the star's ad.
Academy Award winning actress Nicole Kidman is in some hot water with fans, after appearing in an advertisement for Etihad Airways, owned by the United Arab Emirates, for showing Kidman dressed to the nines, relaxing in one of the airline’s luxury suites.
According to E! News, the star is getting some major flack from those who are against the airline, which, as it turns out “has been accused of some pretty disappointing (and anti-woman) business practices.” As E! News puts it, the airline has been attributed for things like “firing female employees for becoming pregnant and forcing flight attendants to live in confined spaces.” Apparently, the partnership between Kidman Etihad has been upsetting some people and E! News reports that the Association of Professional Flight Attendants has issued a formal statement to Nicole.
E! News includes the statement which follows: “We urge you, on behalf of the women and girls that you spoke of so eloquently on International Women’s Day, not to play a part in promoting Etihad Airways, a company that imposes abusive labor practices on its female employees and whose sole owner is a government that stands against the very world that you imagine.”
The advertisement and Nicole Kidman’s endorsement of the company, as its face in the ads mentioned above, bring up an interesting topic of discussion. Should someone who is so visible in the public eye stand behind every single practice of the company that she is promoting? This brings up ethical questions for stars who might choose an endorsement deal for the paycheck, the visibility or their own personal allegiance to the company. On top of those reasons, she might have no idea that the company has partaken in these practices.
Despite this pleading from the A.P.F.A. on behalf of women everywhere, the group did applaud the actress for all the work she’s done as a U.N. Women Goodwill Ambassador, as shared in E! News.
