Kylie Jenner, the latest breakout star of the Kardashian clan, has come under some scrutiny as of late, regarding the issue of blackface. Allegedly, the young starlet appeared on a series of Instagram photos wearing what appeared to be “blackface,” or, the putting on of makeup to appear African American, or black, without being so yourself, for entertainment purposes. The history of this practice, during pre-civil-rights-era movement, is in large part what makes this practice so racially tinged.
According to BET, an authority on race relations in entertainment, “many of the star’s nearly 20 million followers immediately started bashing Jenner for going blackface for the shoot.” Immediately following the backlash, Jenner, as BET writes, “took down the post and replaced is with another image, writing, “This is a black light and neon lights people lets all calm down.”
The public has been known to get riled up in regards to anything race-related, particularly in the wake of such racially tinged acts of violence across the country. As a 17-year-old who lives in the limelight, it must be difficult to convey the clarity with which she intends her photographs to be perceived. The young star took to Twitter to straighten out the mess, clarifying her original caption, saying, “So just got the time to head on social media lol…The photographer used a black light & neon lights for those photos. Yes, in another world I wish I could have pink hair & blue eyes & covered in sparkles. But in this world I’m happy the way God created me. Happy Easter everybody.”
As BET puts it: “This isn’t the first time Jenner has drawn attention for altering her looks.” Rumors of plastic surgery have been abound as the young star’s figure has become more voluptuous with time, in addition to her pouty lips becoming more pronounce on her face.
As a young woman in the limelight, it is a good thing she has her sisters to look up to and take a few pointers from as she navigates the precarious, and sometimes nefarious world of online entertainment.
