Sailor missing for 66 days rescued in good condition

The Coast Guard rescued a man, Louis Jordan, who had been reported missing and survived for 66 days at sea.

Coast Guard technician Petty Officer Kyle McCollum was the first to reach Mr. Jordan via helicopter. He expressed his surprise that Mr. Jordan was standing on his own two feet at the time of the rescue after having been through a trying time at sea, according to the New York Times.

“I was amazed on first impression,” Petty Officer McCollum said of Mr. Jordan, who was last seen Jan. 23 when he sailed out of a marina in Conway, S.C. “Looking at him from the cabin as he was standing there, I wasn’t sure if that was the guy we were getting or not. We were expecting the worst, with blisters and sunburns which could lead to severe dehydration and starving.”

The details of Mr. Jordan’s whereabouts since his disappearance are still unclear at this time. He had been living on a sailboat at a marina in Conway when he took off on a fishing trip to the Gulf Stream.

About one week after his departure, his family reported him missing. At that time, the Coast Guard spent 10 days looking for him. After 66 days, he was spotted by the crew of a cargo ship. Mr. Jordan was rescued about 200 miles off the coast of Cape Hatteras, N.C.

Mr. Jordan was able to explain that his boat was capsized three times on the way to where he was going. He said that during this, damage was done to the communication equipment on board. He also described the physical turmoil he endured on the boat, and reported having a shoulder injury.

Petty Officer McCollum said that the conditions were perfect, clear skies and a calm sea, which aided in the seamless rescue. After rescue, Mr. Jordan was flown directly to a hospital in Norfolk, Virginia. His shoulder was examined at this time and he was treated for dehydration. He was also reunited with his family upon arrival at the hospital.

There has been no attempt at this time to recover his boat, Angel.
