Convicted killer who escaped jail has been captured in Chicago

Kamron Taylor, convicted in February of killing a man in a botched robbery, allegedly beat up a guard, put on his uniform, and walked out of prison.

Police have finally tracked down 23-year-old Kamron Taylor, a convicted killer who managed to escape jail and spent days on the run before being tracked down in Chicago.

Taylor was brought in on an unrelated gun charge. He had escaped from Combs Detention Center in Kankakee on Wednesday, according to a WGNTV.com report.

Chicago police received a call of a suspicious person at about 9 p.m. last night, and Taylor fled on foot as the officers approached him. Taylor was brought into custody after a brief pursuit, and they found a loaded handgun on him, according to police, who said he lied about his name and told the officers he was named “Smith.”

When he was brought to the station, however, officers noticed that he resembled a missing prisoner from Kankakee. They contacted the Kankakee County Sheriff’s Office and U.S. Marshals to confirm that it was indeed Taylor, who will now face additional charges for unlawful use of a handgun.

Taylor was held overnight and will appear in bond court. After that, he will be sent back to Kankakee. The reward for his capture was up to $25,000 late Friday after initially starting at $5,000.

Taylor spent 69 hours on the run before finally being captured, according to the report. Police say he beat up a correctional officer, stole his uniform and keys, and then walked out of jail and into the officer’s car.

He had been convicted in February of killing a man after a botched armed robbery in 2013. He will be sentenced for that conviction in May.

The family of Nelson Williams Jr., who was killed by Taylor, was fearful after hearing of his escape. His family said they were laying low and being careful about who knocked on their door, afraid that he would ambush them too. Taylor had shouted at the family minutes after hearing the verdict back in February, telling them he was going to “get you.”
