Ricky Ricardo would probably be the one wailing instead of his lovely on-and-offscreen wife if he got an eyeful of this dubious tribute.
In 2009, a statue of TV icon Lucille Ball was commissioned for her hometown of Celoron, New York. While the gesture is a thoughtful one, the actual rendering of Ms. Ball has been declared somewhat less so. Celeron residents are still not pleased about it, owing to its legitimately frightening appearance.
The statue depicts Lucy in one of the most well-remembered episodes of “I Love Lucy,” where she is hawking the boozy Vitameatavegamin tonic, unaware of its potent punch. Unfortunately it makes her look less adorably sloshed, and more like a witch trying to poison unsuspecting children.
Celeron residents have had enough of the unflattering tribute.
“Lucille Ball was not only an amazing comedienne, but she was a stunning beauty,” a self-proclaimed “I Love Lucy” super fan told Yahoo. “Her sense of humor only made her more beautiful. This statue looks nothing like the beautiful Lucy we all know. If for no other reason than that… the statue should go.”
The super fan went so far as to start a Facebook page titled “We Love Lucy! Get Rid of this Statue” that currently has over just over 1,900 likes.
“I think it looks like a monster. That is just my opinion. When you see it at night, it is frightening,” continued the unlikely activist, stressing that no criticism is intended towards Dave Poulin, who designed the Lucy statue.
Celeron’s current mayor, Scott Schrecengost, gave an interview to the Jamestown Post-Journal and pointed out that it would cost between $8,000 and $10,000 to have Poulin re-do the statue. Perhaps a fundraiser with mock-up Vitameatavegamin bottles is in order?
