After a two-and-a-half year wait, Eon Productions and MGM have finally unveiled the first teaser trailer for the 24th film in the 007 franchise: "Spectre."
Friday evening was like something of a holiday for die-hard James Bond fans. After a two-and-a-half year wait, Eon Productions and MGM finally unveiled the first teaser trailer for the 24th film in the 007 franchise: “Spectre.” The trailer can now be streamed online, via the James Bond 007 account on YouTube.
The trailer shows Daniel Craig reprising his role as the world’s greatest secret agent, and seems to directly follow the events of 2012’s “Skyfall.” Also featured in the trailer is MI6 secretary, Miss Moneypenny (played by Naomi Harris), who sets the film’s events into motion by returning certain “personal effects” to Bond from the ruins of his parents’ old estate.
The main thrust of the trailer is that Bond has a secret, and that the personal effects recovered from the burnt remains of Skyfall have something to do with a shady criminal organization called Spectre.
Spectre (which stands for Special Executive for Counter-intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge, and Extortion) is one of the main threats that Agent 007 faces, both in the early films of the Bond franchise, and in the original Ian Fleming novels. The leader of Spectre, Ernst Stavro Blofeld, is Bond’s arch-nemesis and the most iconic villain of the entire franchise. For instance, it was Blofeld’s likeness that inspired the character of Dr. Evil in the Austin Powers films.
Blofeld’s name is never expressly stated in the new trailer for Spectre. However, a foreboding moment toward the end of the trailer, where Bond is greeted by a silhouetted character sitting in the middle of a long table, recalls the Blofeld of old. The casting certainly matches the super villain mold, too. Indeed, the character in that particular scene is played by two-time Academy Award winner Christoph Waltz, who became famous for his villainous turn as Nazi Colonel Hans Landa in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds.
Spectre is being directed by Sam Mendes, who also helmed the $1.1 billion-grossing “Skyfall.” The film is scheduled for a November 6th release date. It will be Daniel Craig’s fourth appearance as 007, after the 2006 reboot “Casino Royale,” the 2008 film “Quantum of Solace,” and the aforementioned “Skyfall.”
