Hamm kept his alcohol rehab stint quiet while promoting the final season of 'Mad Men.'
Jon Hamm has earned seven Emmy nominations as best dramatic actor for his portrayal of anti-hero Don Draper in Mad Men, and the 44-year-old actor recently revealed that he has a lot more in common with his character than people may think. Hamm quietly completed a 30-day rehab program for alcohol abuse days before the premiere of Mad Men‘s last season, and a source close to the star told PEOPLE on Wednesday that like Draper, Hamm is weighed down by a lot of darkness and complications.
Hamm’s team recently confirmed to TMZ that the actor checked himself into Silver Hill Hospital in New Canaan, Connecticut at the end of February without anyone from the press realizing, and that he’s officially completed his rehab program.
“With the support of his longtime partner Jennifer Westfeldt, Jon Hamm recently completed treatment for his struggle with alcohol addiction,” stated Hamm’s team. “They have asked for privacy and sensitivity going forward.”
Hamm has been praised since the start of his Mad Men fame for being an upbeat “kind of guy who always remembers your name and makes small talk with the assistants,” but a source told PEOPLE that he’s been struggling with depression for years.
“He lost his mother at a really young age and grew up without that type of figure in his life,” stated the source, who added that Westfeldt gives Hamm the stability he needs.
Westfeldt confirmed her partner’s emotional difficulties in GQ’s latest cover story featuring Hamm, and told the magazine that Mad Men has created a “confusing juxtaposition” for him.
“I think the darkness of Don has weighed heavily on Jon, despite it being the role of a lifetime and the opportunity that gave him the career of his dreams.”
