Former rapper collapses in court after being sentenced to $25 million bail

Marion “Suge” Knight, co-founder of Death Row Records, collapsed in a Los Angeles courtroom shortly after his bail was set at $25 million. The 49-year-old is charged with the murder of Terry Carter and the attempted murder of Cle “Bone” Sloan, as well as two counts of hit-and-run.

Knight’s family claims that he collapsed because he had not received his diabetes medicine while in custody. However, prosecutor Cynthia Barnes told the Los Angeles Times that she thought that fainting was an act Knight put on “in front of the cameras,” and a spokeswoman told news crew that the authorities had offered him his medicine earlier in the day. Knight’s lawyer Matthew Fletcher maintains that his client was neglected while kept in solitary confinement without hot water, blankets, or necessary medication.

Knight appeared lucid when he first entered the courtroom, according to witnesses, although he was late because he missed the transport bus between the courthouse and the prison. Shortly after his bail was set for $25 million, Knight collapsed, hitting his head on the table. He remained unconscious for about 10 minutes, then was removed to the hospital while the judge closed the courtroom.

Knight has been held in custody since early February, when he was charged with consciously running over Terry Carter with his car. Judge Ronald Coen said that he thought the $25 million bail amount “reasonable.”
