‘Orange is the New Black’ officially moves from comedy to drama for Emmys

It is official. Netflix series Orange is the New Black will be labeled as a drama instead of a comedy at the Emmys.

The creators had hoped that the series would be taken by officials as a comedy, but the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences announced some changes in the rules. It was anticipated that the show would be affected by the changes, which say that a show that is more than 30 minutes in length is considered a drama. The changes helped to draw a more defined line between comedies and dramas.

The Academy denied Orange is the New Black producers’ petition to keep the hour-long show in the comedy category. According to Variety, producers called the decision unfair, but they said that they had full confidence in themselves and in the show.

They are required to submit actors and the show in the drama field for 2015. However, shows such as Glee, Jane the Virgin and Shameless were given permission to remain in the comedy category last week.

In 2014, Orange is the New Black competed as a comedy series at the Golden Globe Awards, the Screen Actors Guild Awards and at the Emmys. They picked up a dozen nominations at the Emmys, which included outstanding comedy series and acting bids for Kate Mulgrew and Taylor Schilling.

Uzo Aduba won for outstanding guest actress in a comedy series for her work as Crazy Eyes or inmate Suzanne. The new rules will effect Aduba if she is nominated again. Not only will she find herself competing with other drama actresses, but she will be competing in the supporting drama actress field as reported by USA Today. IMDb credits her for appearing in all of the second season.

The final list of Emmy nominees will be announced on July 16, which is about a month after the nomination process is completed. The Emmys are set to air on Fox on Sept. 20. This is the first year Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Andy Samberg will act as host.
