Film star Ryan Gosling opened about his family life, saying that his girlfriend Eva Mendes and his daughter Esmeralda are the two most complicated and powerful women in his life while at the 2015 SXSW Film Festival in Austin, Texas on Friday.

Gosling is in town to screen his new film, “Lost River.” Appearing with filmmaker Guillermo del Torro, he told the crowd that he likes “working with my friends; I love all these people,” according to an Us Weekly report.

Del Toro joked that Gosling has “a baby with one of them,” speaking of Mendes who stars in the film with him, and Goslin agreed before talking about films that include strong female characters, and said his own life had a powerful female character in Mendes, as well as another one “that’s growing,” referring to his daughter.

Gosling has largely remained silent about his new baby Esmeralda, trying not to take the spotlight away from Mendes and allowing her to talk about her own difficulties and joys in parenthood.

Mendes has said in a previous interview with Women’s Health that she likes the sleepless nights from having a newborn because it’s “bonding with my little girl.”

Ryan Gosling began dating Eva Mendes, who co-starred with him in “The Place Beyond the Pines,” back in September 2011 and the two now live together in Los Feliz, California. Mendes gave birth to Esmeralda Amada Gosling in September 2014.

“Lost River” is a fantasy-neo-noir film produced and directed by Gosling, and it is his directorial debut. Along with Mendes, the film stars Christina Hendricks and Iain De Caestecker. It is scheduled to be released on April 10, and centers around a single mother who begins a dark lifestyle while facing financial problems, resulting in her eldest son having to take care of his younger brother, and he eventually discovers an underwater utopia.
