Fashion designers Dolce & Gabbana have come out against children in gay marriages, but their criticism also includes surrogate mothers and in vitro fertilization. “No chemical offsprings and rented uterus,” they said in an interview with Italy’s Panorama magazine, in which Dolce referred to “children of chemistry” as “synthetic,” and Gabbana said “the only family is a traditional one.”
Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce are designers of fashion for the stars, but one of those stars, Sir Elton John, is encouraging a boycott of their label following the inflammatory statements. John, who has two sons with his husband David, is outraged. “How dare you refer to my beautiful children as ‘synthetic,'” he wrote in a scathing Twitter post. Both boys were born to the same surrogate mother.
#BoycottDolceGabbana is the mantra among many of the rich and famous who are following John’s lead. Perez Hilton, whose son was born to a surrogate mother, helped spread the boycott hashtag in a Twitter post. Martina Navratilova also tweeted support of the singer, saying she will be interested (as are many) to see if “this ridiculousness hurts them in the bank.” Courtney Love tweeted that she just wanted to take all her Dolce & Gabbana clothing and burn them.
Dolce & Gabbana’s women’s fashion show in Milan early this year had a theme of motherhood, with models carrying babies and one Italian model heavily pregnant. However, they said their belief is that “you are born and you have a father and a mother.”
The two fashion designers are gay, and were a couple for 23 years before breaking up in 2005, their business partner relationship continuing after the romantic relationship ended. They said they had not meant to be judgmental about others, but were merely expressing their own opinions.
