After only seven episodes, ‘Fashion Police’ host and comedienne extraordinaire Kathy Griffin has announced her plans to exit the E! Fashion Show, citing reasons of differing comedic tastes.
The departure comes just a short time after long-time host Kelly Osbourne, 30, decided to leave the show herself. Kelly made her decision after co-host Guiliana Rancic made a controversial comment regarding singer Zendaya (a friend of Osbourne’s) and her hair, in reference to it probably smelling of “patchouli oil…or weed.”
It is not surprising that after supporting the dearly departed comedic legend Joan Rivers that Osbourne, too, would feel the loss of her co-star, and that a comment of that nature might be just the thing to send her over the edge with the network. In an effort to fill the powerhouse’s shoes, Kathy did her best to satisfy the demands of the network and proclivities of the executives in charge; however, in the end, Kathy was not in agreement with the network’s tendency to promote a humor that appeared scathing and unkind.
As detailed in The Washington Post, she wrote on Twitter:
“I’m no saint – I’m a feminist AND a Gurrrl who loves an offensive joke or a well-timed barb and you will find plenty in my repertoire. But I do not want to use my comedy to contribute to a culture of unattainable perfectionism and intolerance towards difference.”
The official announcement was made by Kathy via Twitter on Thursday, March 12 and was received by a counsel of her comic peers quite favorably. Us Magazine quotes stars and fellow comediennes like talk show host Chelsea Handler saying, “Way to go girl. Stick to your guns. Onwards and sideways. Lub you.” In addition to Handler, former View co-host Rosie O’Donnell, who also announced a highly publicized departure from her show just recently, took to Twitter to share: “griffin / odonnell – proud of u !!!” Apparently, she likes to keep things brief.
Finally, Whoopi Goldberg shared: “Bravo @kathygriffin! You have to try it to know if you like it. You did and it wasn’t for you. And now, now a new change is going to come.”
Kathy herself tweeted on Thursday night, explaining her sudden decision to leae the show, saying, “When I chose to step into the shoes of my beloved Joan Rivers…I was thrilled to continues her legacy as a woman being brash and eccentric on television. I discovered that my style does not fit with the creative direction of the show and now it’s time to move on.”
While Kathy took great steps to fill the big shoes of her predecessor, ultimately, she discovered that the position was not best suited to her fashion.
