Looks like Disney just couldn’t “Let it Go.”
The animated avalanche Frozen, which made over 1.3 billion dollars at the box office and broke home video sales records, is returning to screens. John Lasseter, chief creative officer of Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios, made the announcement alongside Disney head Bob Iger and Josh Gad, who voices lovable snowman Olaf.
The company revealed their plans during Walt Disney Co.’s annual shareholders meeting today from San Francisco, alongside a cheeky tweet that read, “Forecast: Winter weather ahead! @DisneyAnimation developing #Frozen2.” The tweet was accompanied by a picture of sisters Elsa and Anna, with Sven the reindeer and Kristoff.
Other than a Broadway show and the animated short “Frozen Fever,” Disney has stayed mum on any “Frozen” sequel plans until now.
“Frozen Fever,” which reunites the flick’s characters and songwriters, will run as a cinematic hors d’oeuvre ahead of Disney’s live-action rendering of “Cinderella,” which arrives in theaters this weekend.
“We enjoyed making ‘Frozen Fever’ so much and being back in that world with those characters,” Lasseter said. “Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck have come up with a great idea for a sequel and you will be hearing a lot more about it and we’re taking you back to Arendelle. We are so excited about that.”
Frozen’s directors Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck are developing the project with producer Peter Del Vecho for Walt Disney Animation Studios, which won the Academy Award for best animated feature for the film, as well as best original song, the ubiquitous “Let it Go.”
The studio has yet to reveal a release date and/or production details for Frozen 2.
