Sundance reveals January’s annual film festival’s schedule

Sundance is still 2 months away, but the festival has released enough of its schedule to get the true film fan very excited.

The Sundance Institute, founded by Robert Redford, is a year-round program that supports independent film artists and runs public programs for film enthusiasts. Their annual January film festival, running this year from Jan. 22-Feb 1., frequently debuts critically acclaimed independent movies and is a reliable source of celebrity spotting.

Sundance has announced that their 2015 schedule will feature 118 feature-length films, which include movies from 29 countries and 45 movies made by first-time filmmakers. John Cooper, the director of the Sundance Film Festival, is quoted on the website assuring fans that, “The selections for our 2014 Festival will take audiences on a wild ride of emotional extremes.”

EW has already begun covering the slate of offerings and has noted a slew of relatively big-name comedic actors who will be featured in dramatic roles. Kristin Wiig, formerly of SNL, and Ken Jeong, most famous for his role as an unhinged kingpin in The Hangover, are 2 examples. Sarah Silverman is also stepping outside of her comfort zone in a “high drama” role as a suburban mother struggling with her demons. Other, more expected, dramatic turns will be offered up by Michael Fassbender as a mysterious 19th-century American frontiersman and Nicole Kidman as a grieving Australian mother.

EW continues to update their site with listings from the Sundance press releases. As always, this year there will be aworld documentary competition and a US documentary competition, which will feature a movie sure to spark headlines, about a less-recent shooting of an unarmed African-American teenager, titled 3 ½ Minutes.
