Reports of Grumpy Cat earning $100 million are “completely inaccurate,” says owner

Something to be a little less grumpy about, maybe? British news source The Daily Express claimed on Sunday that the cute but perpetually sad-seeming feline known internationally as Grumpy Cat had amassed a fortune of $64 million British pounds, which translates to roughly $100 million American pounds.

The Daily Express claimed the cat, whose real name is Tardar Sauce, has earned more than such Hollywood A-Listers Nicole Kidman, Matt Damon, and Matthew McConaughey. Fellow British publication The Telegraph claimed Grumpy Cat pulled in more than either Gwyneth Paltrow or footballer Christiano Ronaldo.

Unfortunately, Grumpy Cat’s owner Tabatha Bundesen has told The Huffington Post that the $100 million number is “completely inaccurate.” She did not give a specific number for her pet’s earnings, alluding to the possibility of setting the record straight in full interview.

Whatever the actual amount she has earned is, Grumpy Cat has certainly proved to be a most lucrative investment for Bundesen. A 29-year-old Arizona native, she was working as a waitress when her brother posted a photo of her distinctive cat to Reddit and the rest is history. Bundesen admits that “I was able to quit my job as a waitress within days of her first appearance on social media.”

Grumpy Cat’s empire includes over 500,000 followers on Instagram and a YouTube page with over 16 million views. She has an endorsement deal with the cat food “Friskies” and has “authored” a best-selling book. Her latest endeavors include a line of iced coffee called “Grumppuccino” and a television holiday movie for Lifetime TV.
