British actress-turned-activist Emma Watson conducted a live Facebook Q&A session at the social media giant’s London headquarters to help raise awareness for International Women’s Day.
The 24-year-old star – who is most widely known for her role as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter films – is now a UN ambassador for women and an outspoken advocate of gender equality reform. She has helped launched the HeForShe campaign, which encourages men to join the fight for equal gender rights.
“Men often think that feminism is a women’s word,” said Watson, “but if you stand for gender equality, you are a feminist.” She articulated that the campaign is not only directed towards men, and also called upon women to support it. “It’s not enough to ask men to come and support us. We really need to support each other, we really do.”
About 240,000 men have pledged their commitment to the campaign on the HeForShe website, including President Barack Obama and actor Matt Damon. The campaign’s target goal is enlisting the support of one billion men and boys by the summer. “There has been a ground swell of support but we need more men to take a stand for gender equality,” said Watson.
Watson also opened up about the threats she received following a speech she gave on women’s rights at the UN. A hoax website threatened to reveal nude photos of her last September after she made her speech urging gender equality.
“I knew it was a hoax, I knew the pictures didn’t exist, but I think a lot of people that were close to me knew gender equality was an issue but didn’t think it was that urgent, that it was a thing of the past,” she said. “And then when they saw that the minute I stood up talking about women’s rights I was immediately threatened, I think they were really shocked.”
Watson said she was “raging” after she received the threats, and her family was also extremely upset. However, it also helped solidify her resolve. “If they were trying to put me off it, they did the opposite,” she said.
