During the PaleyFest at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood Friday night, the “Homeland” panel dropped more than one teaser about the upcoming fifth season.
The Showtime drama is getting ready to take off to Europe for shooting season five where they will jump ahead two and a half years from the close of season four.
That was not the only piece of news writer Alex Gansa gave away. Star Claire Danes, who plays Carrie Mathison, is hanging up her CIA badge, according to Variety.
As stimulating as the information was, Gansa would not further elaborate on the teasers. He did, however, mention the importance of Germany and Europe in relation to concerns about terrorism and Western security issues. Danes added in her commentary by joking that her character is now making beer.
The session panel was attended heavily by exec producers Alexander Cary, Chip Johannessen, Patrick Harbinson, Meredith Stiehm, director/exec producer Lesli Linka Glatter and composer Sean Callery. Besides Dane, the only other actor was Maury Sterling, who plays CIA operative Max.
The session was moderated by Julie Chen, co-host of CBS’s daytime series “The Talk. The conversation was guided into more than one interesting topics. One discussion was that of the strong divide among writers around exploring a romance between Carrie and her co-worker Quinn.
But an even bigger topic was opened up when Danes was asked about the shocking scene early in season four where Carrie appears to consider drowning her infant daughter. Danes said she knew it would be a dangerous move as it could alienate the audience entirely.
Danes was quick to clarify that the difficult shooting of the scene with an underwater camera was not with a real baby.
Still the biggest rise of the night out of the crowd was when an audience member asked Danes about Carrie’s infamous “cry face”, the bulging eyes and quivering jaw look. Danes responded by saying her crying is authentic and that those skills were evident from day one when she was casted on ABC’s “My So-Called Life” almost 20 years ago.
Gansa was asked if the show would tackle the beheadings and other unspeakable acts of cruelty attributed in the past year to the Islamist terror group ISIS. He thoughtfully answered by saying the show gets to comment on current events unlike any other show does, and they take that responsibility very seriously.
