Outrage over Facebook ‘feeling fat’ emoticon

A new Facebook “feelings” emoticon is drawing outrage that has led to a petition to remove it from the list of figures that can be chosen. A petition to remove the “feeling fat” emoticon has received over 13,000 signatures. Catherine Weingarten wrote the Change.org petition, which is being supported by Endangered Bodies, a group promoting body positivity. Twitter users are being asked to speak up, using the hashtag #FatIsNotAFeeling to explain why they want Facebook to make the change.

Weingarten says that the the emoticon is far from harmless. She says it can trivialize a person’s experience, or encourage someone to put out a negative body image and have people validate it. “Fatness isn’t a feeling, it’s something on the outside; it’s an insult. A feeling should be something more internal.”

Facebook offers more than 100 feelings emoticons that can be added to a post. The picture for “feeling fat” is nearly identical to the one for “feeling stuffed.” The yellow smiley is round-faced and and blushing, and has a double chin. Weingarten says she realizes it is supposed to be funny, but that seeing that status makes her angry. She says when users set their status to “feeling fat” they are mocking people who consider themselves overweight, which can include people who have eating disorders. “That is not OK.”

A video on the Endangered Bodies website says they think it supports and promotes the “endless torrent of judgment and pressure to be perfect” that is felt across the world by young people.
