Samsung’s new Gear VR isn’t quite ready for market — but it’s better

The near Gear VR for the Galaxy S6 has a sharper image and other improvements like a fan to keep the viewer's forehead cool.

Virtual reality is getting better every day — but it still has a ways to go, as shown by the Gear VR for the Galaxy S6.

A review for Engadget notes that the Gear VR is smaller and lighter and has a wider focus margin. It’s about 15 percent smaller than the virtual reality system for the Note 4. It also has a more comfortable strap, according to the review.

The display is also improving. The S6 has the same resolution as the Note 4, but a ppi of 577 compared to 518 for the Note 4. As a result, the view is sharper. However, the Gear VR for the Note 4 has a wider field of view — something the company insists is not better, just different.

The new Gear VR comes with a focus ring adjustment that goes further in both directions to assist people with better eyesight than 20/20. Also, there is a mechanical fan that cools the forehead and prevents fogging of the lens.

It’s not quite ready yet, with Max Cohen, vice president of mobile at manufacturer Oculus, telling the reviewer that it’s “still an Innovator Edition.”

He said there was a lot of room to improve the device. Cohen noted that even though the S6 version debuted just four months after the original was launched, it has many new features, such as the fan and the focusing ring.

Until the improvements slow down, they indicate that there is much work to be done to perfect the device and make it ready for the market.
