Now you can shop car insurance rates on Google too

This week Google launched a car insurance rate comparison service

Google already lets users compare flight, hotel, and credit card rates using the Google Compare tool and it appears auto insurance is next. The search engine giant announced this week that residents of California can now use “Google Compare for Auto Insurance,” a comparison shopping site that lets consumers compare rates from different insurance carriers. The service will be rolled out to more states in the near future.

“When it comes to buying car insurance, 80 percent of drivers think they’d find a better policy if they could compare more than two providers,” said Google AdWords VP, Jerry Dischler, in a blog post. “That’s why today we’re introducing Google Compare for car insurance in California, with more states to follow.”

According to USA Today, the option to use the rate comparison tool will appear when a user searches Google for “car insurance.” Additionally, consumers can go directly to the site itself. Once there, they will just need enter in their zip code, plus the make and model of their car to get started.

Currently, the the service allows consumers to compare rates from up to 14 different insurance providers. But some big names are missing from the lineup, State Farm, GEICO, Progressive and Allstate among them. USA Today reports that these companies are reluctant to join up with the Google service due to Compare’s emphasis on price above all else.

Adam Lyons, CEO of rival car insurance comparison tool, The Zebra, notes that his service considers factors like claims ratings and policy features in addition to price.

“Google is just focused on price, instead of educating the consumer, so major carriers are very resistant to supporting that goal,” Lyons told USA Today.
