2015 Tribeca Film Festival to focus on films that capture ‘everyday life’

Organizers for the 14th Tribeca Film Festival released half of the prestigious event’s slate of 97 feature-length films on Tuesday, and revealed that this year’s festival will consist of films from at least 31 countries. While these selections will feature remarkable actors such as James Franco, Dakota Fanning and Richard Gere, several of the chosen films center primarily on the struggles and complexities of basic, everyday life.

Robert De Niro, film producer Jane Rosenthal and investor Craig Hatkoff founded the Tribeca Film Festival in 2001, in an attempt to revitalize the downtown New York neighborhood after the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center. Over 6,200 films were submitted for this year’s festival, from countries ranging from South Africa to Iceland, with a large majority of the most highly-anticipated selections noticeably claiming to be focused on the lives and emotions of regular people.

“We were inspired by, and really admire the ambition and risk-taking of the filmmakers who are striving to capture the emotion and complexities of everyday life in this year’s submissions,” said Frederic Boyer, artistic director of the festival.

Among this year’s festival’s most highly-anticipated selections are crime thriller The Adderall Diaries, which is based on the best-selling memoir by Stephen Elliott and stars Franco as a novelist suffering from writer’s block, Meadowland, which stars Olivia Wilde and Luke Wilson as a couple whose son goes missing, and Autism in Love, which tells the story of adults with the disorder.

The festival, which runs from Apr. 15-26, will open with the world premiere of Live from New York!, which centers on NBC’s iconic late-night comedy sketch show Saturday Night Live.
