Stephen Colbert conducts fiery interview with Smaug the Dragon

The final episode of The Colbert Report is rapidly approaching, and host Stephen Colbert is making sure to fill his interview slate for the last few installments with some of the hottest guests imaginable. Critics doubted the political satirist could top his recent segment with President Obama, but Colbert responded with a fiery and hilarious interview with Smaug the Dragon on Thursday’s episode.

The final week of The Colbert Report kicked off with Obama replacing Colbert to host his “The Word” segment, which he renamed “The Decree.” The president showed his sense of humor in the critically-approved segment, playfully making fun of Obamacare and taking a few jabs at himself. Colbert proved he had even more tricks up his sleeve on Thursday’s episode, when the CGI Smaug burst through the wall of his set for one of the most memorable interviews in the show’s nine-year history.

“I want you to know that I am not intimidated by you, even though you have a reputation as a tough interview because you often eat the host,” Colbert told Smaug, before the dragon told him not to worry since he’d already filled up for the day on the ladies of “The View.”

Benedict Cumberbatch, who voices Smaug in the films, lent his voice for the segment to promote The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, which releases in theaters on Dec. 17. Smaug and Colbert, a noted Tolkien enthusiast who even had a cameo in the final Hobbit film, talked about how the dragon is a fiscal conservative and “typical liberal Hollywood bias” is to blame for Smaug being cast as the villain in Peter Jackson’s trilogy.

The duo even made a few jabs at some of the more tame dragons in television and film, with Smaug calling the Game of Thrones dragons “Khaleesi-whipped lap lizards.”

Colbert’s run as host of The Colbert Report will end on Dec. 18, and Grimmy the Grim Reaper is scheduled to be his final guest. Comedy Central will air a marathon of the show which will include some of it’s most famous episodes on Dec. 18 from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.
