So much for “just like us.” Only weeks after a allegedly untouched photo of supermodel Cindy Crawford hit the web, giving millions of women comfort by revealing her less than perfect body, Crawford is threatening to sue media outlets who run the picture.
TMZ broke the news early Sunday morning, reporting that Crawford’s lawyer has sent a letter promising to sue outlets who reprint the photographer. Crawford’s lawyer alleges that the original photograph was photo-shopped to make Crawford’s abdomen appear less toned and smooth than it is in real life.
The photo went viral in the middle of February. Marie Claire magazine wrote a blog post at the time, claiming the photo was a unretouched leak from a December 2013 cover story for the magazine’s Mexico and Latin America version. The blog stated that it had no idea how the image was leaked but expressed pride at how it showed Crawford’s “real” side: “No matter where the photo came from, it’s an enlightenment—we’ve always known Crawford was beautiful, but seeing her like this only makes us love her more.”
Numerous expressions of support came from women and advocates everywhere, praising Crawford and the reminder that even supermodels may need Photoshop to look magazine-worthy. Crawford at the time remained silent but now seems to be more concerned with how the photo may negatively affect her modeling career.
Crawford’s lawyer included a statement from the photographer claiming the image was stolen and retouched. Crawford’s husband Rande Gerber added his voice to the debate by posting a photo of his wife showing off a slim body in a bikini on Valentine’s Day.
