Uber reveals that they were hacked

The rideshare service Uber has had its fair share of news making headlines that have not all been positive. The most recent piece of news to be released on the company involves a hacking that occurred last May.

Reportedly the hacking was done by an unauthorized third party and exposed the personal information in the company’s driver database.

Katherine Tassi, Uber’s managing counsel of data privacy spoke out about the severity of the incident.

“A small percentage of current and former Uber driver partner names and driver’s license numbers were contained in the database. We are notifying impacted drivers, but we have not received any reports of actual misuse of information as a result of this incident,” she said.

The hacking incident was reportedly a one time that gave the hackers access to the information of about 50,000 Uber drivers in the United States, including their names and their drivers license numbers. A large 21,000 of those drivers were based in California. Those drivers who were affected were advised to pay close attention to their credit reports to look for fraudulent usage or identity theft.

The drivers who were involved were also given a year free to use ProtectMyID Alert from Experian to ensure their privacy as much as possible given the circumstances.

It is unclear to the company how the security was breached but they are confident that they patched up any holes and that they are not at risk for having the same thing occur again. Certainly both the drivers and also the riders that take part in Uber hope to keep all of their crucial personal information to themselves.

Uber has filed a lawsuit through the San Francisco Federal Court in efforts to get as much information as possible about the third party that managed to get into their system.
