Style experts say that expensive items in the fashion industry are often stolen, but a dress such as Nyong'o's may be difficult to sell on the black market.

Someone has stolen a pearl gown worth $150,000 that was worn by Lupita Nyong’o at the Oscars — an occurrence that style experts say is actually pretty common.

The Associated Press quoted style expert and fashion commentator Mary Alice Stephenson as saying it’s “not shocking” that the expensive dress was lifted from her hotel room, and she herself lost a Fendi bag that was held for ransom, according to the AP report.

Francisco Costa designed the ivory dress for the Calvin Klein Collection, and it could make the thief a pretty penny on the black market, Stephenson said, as lots of collectors out there with private collections are actually looking for stolen merchandise.

It won’t be so easy for the thief in this case, however, as Los Angeles Auction House director Bryan Abbott said that the dress’s additional value comes from the fact that it came from a celebrity, and if it was stolen, “you wouldn’t be able to realize that value,” he said according to the AP report.

He said he couldn’t think of a harder item to sell than a high-profile Oscar dress form a famous manufacturer that was worn by a celebrity.

Also, the 6,000 pearls that cover the dress wouldn’t be worth a lot on their own, he said.

The dress was reported missing from the hotel room of the actress late Wednesday in West Hollywood. Nyong’o, a Mexican-Kenyan actress and film director who is known for her role in Best Picture-winner 12 Years of Slave, in which she won Best Supporting Actress, was present when police arrived and took a report. However, she was not in the room when the gown was swiped.

Before the awards ceremony, Nyong’o told the AP she wore the dress as an “homage to Prince.”
