Alcon Entertainment announced Thursday that Harrison Ford is officially taking on the role of Rick Deckard for a second time in the upcoming

sequel Blade Runner 2. Producers Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove said that they were “honored” to have the 72-year-old actor back in the role.

Although Ford is back, the sequel will not include director Ridley Scott, who directed the original 1982 science fiction thriller. Variety reported that Scott has signed on the project as a producer. Scott told MTV News that the sequel’s script is “written and ready to go.”

Currently, Alcon Entertainment is negotiating with Denis Villeneure, director of Prisoners, to replace Scott in the director’s chair. Johnson and Kosove said that Villeneure is a “singular talent” as they “experienced personally on Prisoners.”

Ford expressed his excitement about the sequel. He said that the script is the “best thing I’ve ever read.”

Scott said that the sequel would not be one with “lots of action” and large amounts of special effects. He explained that he “can’t really” because the film has “landed somehow on a very credible future.” He added that it is hard to change it because it has been “influential with everything else.”

The original Scott-directed film focused on a dystopian Los Angeles in the not-too-distant future of 2019. Although it did not produce strong numbers at the box office, the film did become a cult classic. And today, it is praised for its production design.

The release date for the sequel has not been set, but Ford fans and sci-fi lovers will get their fix later this year. Ford will hit the screens in December as Han Solo in Star Wars: The Force Awakens for the first time in 32 years with fellow cast members Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia) and Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker). Rumors that Ford may appear alongside Chris Pratt in Disney’s adaptation of Indiana Jones have also surfaced, according to Entertainment Wise.
