Producer of The Killing says net neutrality will protect competition

Veena Sud, producer of The Killing, told regulators that her experience with her show illustrates how an open internet can promote media diversity.

The Killing is an AMC series that almost didn’t make it to a third season. The only reason it will be getting one is because Netflix offered to help finance. Veena said, “We were resurrected and went on to tell some of our best stories, including ones involving the death penalty, teenage homelessness and drug addiction.”

Streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon have series like Orange Is The New Black and Transparent that offer different points of views. Veena also claims that about 20% of series on traditional TV are run by women, unlike new digital platforms where 40% of series are run by women.

Unlike traditional TV, shows that play exclusively online thrive due to “pent up demand by a public tired of the same old same old…We are seeing the free market work as Adam Smith intended”, she says.

After Veena Sud spoke, she was followed by video testimony from Internet founder Sir Timothy Berners-Lee. Sir Berners-Lee said, the FCC’s planned net neutrality rules are “about consumer rights, free speech, and democracy.”
